Terms of Service

Effective date: August 12, 2026
Last updated: August 12, 2026

Welcome to ShawAlphabet.com.

These Terms of Service govern your access to and use of ShawAlphabet.com, including its articles, educational materials, interactive tools, converters, keyboards, dictionaries, downloads, and other features made available through the website.

By accessing or using ShawAlphabet.com, you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree with these Terms, please discontinue use of the website.

1. About ShawAlphabet.com

ShawAlphabet.com is an independent educational and reference publication focused on the Shavian alphabet, also known as the Shaw alphabet, together with related subjects such as English phonetics, pronunciation, spelling reform, typography, Unicode, alternative writing systems, and digital text technology.

Shavian is encoded in the Unicode Standard in the range U+10450–U+1047F. The Unicode Standard identifies the system as Shavian, Shaw’s alphabet, or the Proposed British Alphabet and attributes the selected alphabet to Kingsley Read.

ShawAlphabet.com is not an official representative of George Bernard Shaw, Kingsley Read, their estates, the Unicode Consortium, the University of Reading, or any other person or organization discussed on the website.

The current ShawAlphabet.com is also independent of previous projects or publishers that may historically have used this domain.

2. Educational and Informational Use

The content provided by ShawAlphabet.com is intended primarily for:

  • education;
  • general information;
  • historical research;
  • linguistic reference;
  • learning the Shavian alphabet;
  • experimentation with alternative writing systems; and
  • personal use of our interactive tools.

Nothing published on ShawAlphabet.com should be considered professional legal, academic, linguistic, technical, financial, or other professional advice.

You are responsible for independently verifying information when accuracy is important for academic publication, professional work, software development, formal transcription, legal documents, or other significant uses.

3. Eligibility and Acceptable Use

You may use ShawAlphabet.com only for lawful purposes.

You agree not to use the website in a way that:

  • violates applicable laws or regulations;
  • attempts to gain unauthorized access to the website, server, database, or connected systems;
  • interferes with the normal operation or security of the website;
  • introduces malware, viruses, malicious scripts, or harmful code;
  • performs excessive automated requests that degrade website performance;
  • attempts to bypass usage restrictions, rate limits, or security measures;
  • impersonates another person or organization;
  • uses our services to infringe the rights of others;
  • extracts or republishes substantial portions of our content without authorization; or
  • uses automated systems in a manner that imposes an unreasonable burden on our infrastructure.

We may restrict or block access when we reasonably believe these Terms are being violated.

4. Shavian Converter and Automated Tools

ShawAlphabet.com may provide tools such as:

  • English-to-Shavian converters;
  • Shavian typing tools;
  • virtual keyboards;
  • word lookup tools;
  • spelling tools;
  • Unicode inspectors;
  • font testing utilities;
  • quizzes;
  • flashcards;
  • reading exercises; and
  • other linguistic or educational applications.

These tools are provided primarily for educational and experimental purposes.

Converter Accuracy

English-to-Shavian conversion is not necessarily deterministic.

A word’s appropriate representation may depend on factors such as:

  • pronunciation;
  • regional accent;
  • rhotic or non-rhotic speech;
  • grammatical context;
  • word meaning;
  • part of speech;
  • homographs;
  • proper names; and
  • different Shavian spelling conventions.

As a result, an automated converter may occasionally produce an incorrect, ambiguous, non-standard, or debatable result.

You should not assume that automated output represents the only possible or authoritative Shavian spelling.

ShawAlphabet.com does not guarantee the accuracy of converter results, dictionary entries, pronunciation information, generated text, spelling suggestions, or other automated output.

5. No Guarantee of Availability

We aim to keep ShawAlphabet.com available and functional, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted access.

Features may occasionally be:

  • modified;
  • updated;
  • discontinued;
  • temporarily unavailable;
  • replaced;
  • restricted; or
  • removed.

We may change the website or its tools without prior notice when necessary for maintenance, security, technical improvements, editorial changes, or other operational reasons.

6. Intellectual Property

Unless otherwise stated, original material created specifically for ShawAlphabet.com—including original articles, explanations, graphics, interfaces, exercises, layouts, and educational resources—is protected by applicable intellectual-property laws.

You may use our publicly accessible content for ordinary personal and educational reading.

You may not, without permission:

  • republish substantial portions of our articles;
  • reproduce entire guides on another website;
  • scrape and republish our database or structured datasets;
  • remove copyright or attribution notices;
  • sell copies of our original educational materials;
  • present our original content as your own;
  • clone substantial portions of the website; or
  • use our branding in a way that implies affiliation or endorsement.

Reasonable quotations for commentary, criticism, education, research, or reference should include appropriate attribution where required.

7. The Shavian Alphabet and Historical Material

ShawAlphabet.com does not claim ownership of the Shavian writing system itself.

Historical publications, archival documents, photographs, fonts, illustrations, quotations, manuscripts, trademarks, book titles, software, and other third-party materials remain subject to the rights applicable to their respective owners.

The fact that material concerns George Bernard Shaw, Kingsley Read, the Shavian alphabet, or a historical version of ShawAlphabet.com does not mean that such material is owned by the current website.

Where third-party material is displayed or referenced, it may be used under permission, license, public-domain status, applicable copyright exceptions, or another lawful basis.

8. Previous Uses of the ShawAlphabet.com Domain

The ShawAlphabet.com domain has previously been associated with material concerning a revised version of the Shaw alphabet by Paul Gershon Vandenbrink. Historical typography references still identify the former domain in connection with that project.

The present website is a new independent publication.

Unless explicitly stated otherwise, we do not claim:

  • ownership of previous versions of ShawAlphabet.com;
  • access to previous databases;
  • ownership of historical mailing lists;
  • ownership of previous fonts or software;
  • ownership of previous articles or illustrations;
  • authorization from previous operators; or
  • status as the official continuation of a previous ShawAlphabet.com project.

Historical references are provided for documentation and educational context only.

9. Unicode and Third-Party Standards

ShawAlphabet.com may refer to Unicode character names, code points, technical specifications, or other information relating to the Unicode Standard.

The Unicode Consortium maintains its own copyright, licensing, intellectual-property, and trademark policies. Its official policies state that Unicode and the Unicode Logo are registered trademarks of Unicode, Inc.

Our references to Unicode are descriptive and educational. They do not imply endorsement, certification, sponsorship, partnership, or affiliation with the Unicode Consortium.

If you intend to redistribute Unicode data, documentation, fonts, charts, or other materials originating from Unicode, you are responsible for reviewing the applicable Unicode license and terms before doing so.

10. Third-Party Fonts, Software and Resources

ShawAlphabet.com may recommend or link to:

  • fonts;
  • keyboard layouts;
  • software;
  • open-source projects;
  • source-code repositories;
  • dictionaries;
  • browser extensions;
  • mobile applications;
  • archives;
  • academic resources; or
  • other third-party services.

Third-party resources remain subject to their own licenses, terms, privacy policies, and conditions.

A reference or link does not automatically mean that ShawAlphabet.com owns, controls, sponsors, or endorses the third-party resource.

You are responsible for reviewing any third-party license before copying, modifying, installing, redistributing, or commercially using third-party software, fonts, datasets, or other materials.

11. Downloads

ShawAlphabet.com may provide downloadable materials such as:

  • alphabet charts;
  • worksheets;
  • reference sheets;
  • keyboard layouts;
  • educational documents;
  • text files;
  • datasets; or
  • software-related resources.

Any specific license accompanying a download takes precedence over the general provisions of these Terms for that particular file.

If no separate license is provided, the download is intended for personal and educational use unless otherwise stated.

You are responsible for ensuring that downloaded material is suitable for your device, software, or intended purpose.

12. User Submissions

ShawAlphabet.com may allow users to submit:

  • corrections;
  • feedback;
  • suggestions;
  • pronunciation information;
  • example words;
  • technical reports;
  • messages; or
  • other contributions.

You retain ownership of original material you submit unless another agreement expressly states otherwise.

By voluntarily submitting material intended for publication, you grant ShawAlphabet.com a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to review, reproduce, edit, format, display, and publish that submission for purposes related to operating and improving the website.

You confirm that you have the right to submit the material and that doing so does not knowingly infringe another person’s intellectual-property or privacy rights.

We are not obligated to publish any submission.

13. Corrections and Editorial Changes

We may correct, update, reorganize, expand, or remove content at any time.

Because linguistic conventions, technical support, software, external resources, and historical research may change or develop, previously published material may later be revised.

Submitting a correction does not guarantee that a requested change will be made.

Editorial decisions remain with ShawAlphabet.com.

The website may contain links to third-party websites.

These links may include universities, archives, libraries, font projects, software repositories, community websites, historical resources, dictionaries, and educational publications.

We are not responsible for the content, availability, security, accuracy, advertising, privacy practices, or policies of external websites.

Visiting a third-party website is at your own discretion and subject to that website’s own terms and policies.

ShawAlphabet.com may display advertising, sponsorships, or affiliate links.

If affiliate links are used, ShawAlphabet.com may receive a commission when a visitor makes a qualifying purchase or completes another eligible action through such a link.

Where appropriate, commercial relationships will be disclosed.

Advertising or affiliate relationships do not automatically constitute endorsement of every claim made by a third-party advertiser, retailer, publisher, or service provider.

16. Privacy

Your use of ShawAlphabet.com may also be governed by our Privacy Policy.

The Privacy Policy explains how information may be collected, processed, stored, and used when visitors interact with the website.

Third-party services embedded in or linked from ShawAlphabet.com may have separate privacy policies.

We respect intellectual-property rights.

If you believe that material published on ShawAlphabet.com infringes your copyright, trademark, or other rights, please contact us with sufficient information to identify:

  • the protected work or right;
  • the material you believe is problematic;
  • the relevant ShawAlphabet.com URL;
  • your relationship to the rights holder;
  • your preferred contact information; and
  • any supporting information that may help us evaluate the request.

We will review good-faith complaints and may remove, restrict, attribute, replace, or otherwise modify material when appropriate.

18. Disclaimer of Warranties

ShawAlphabet.com and its services are provided on an as-is and as-available basis.

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we make no warranties, express or implied, regarding:

  • accuracy;
  • completeness;
  • reliability;
  • availability;
  • compatibility;
  • fitness for a particular purpose;
  • converter accuracy;
  • uninterrupted operation; or
  • absence of errors.

You use the website and its tools at your own discretion.

19. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, ShawAlphabet.com and its owners, operators, authors, editors, contributors, and service providers will not be liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or similar damages arising from your use of, inability to use, or reliance upon the website.

This includes losses resulting from reliance on:

  • converter output;
  • pronunciation data;
  • spelling recommendations;
  • historical information;
  • software instructions;
  • third-party downloads;
  • external websites; or
  • technical information.

Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot legally be excluded under applicable law.

20. Indemnification

To the extent permitted by applicable law, you agree to be responsible for claims, losses, liabilities, costs, or expenses resulting from your unlawful use of ShawAlphabet.com or your material violation of these Terms.

21. Suspension or Termination of Access

We may restrict, suspend, or terminate access to particular features or the website when reasonably necessary to:

  • protect website security;
  • prevent abuse;
  • comply with legal obligations;
  • address significant violations of these Terms; or
  • protect the rights of ShawAlphabet.com or third parties.

We are not obligated to provide access indefinitely to any particular service or feature.

22. Changes to These Terms

We may revise these Terms of Service from time to time.

Changes may be made to reflect:

  • new tools or services;
  • changes in website functionality;
  • legal or regulatory developments;
  • security requirements;
  • editorial changes; or
  • changes in business practices.

The latest revision date will appear at the top of this page.

Your continued use of ShawAlphabet.com after revised Terms become effective constitutes acceptance of those revised Terms to the extent permitted by applicable law.

23. Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be invalid or unenforceable, the remaining provisions will continue to apply to the fullest extent permitted by law.

An invalid provision should be interpreted or limited, where possible, so that it most closely reflects its original purpose while remaining enforceable.

24. No Waiver

Failure to enforce any provision of these Terms does not constitute a permanent waiver of that provision or any other right.

25. Entire Agreement

These Terms of Service, together with the Privacy Policy, Disclaimer, and any additional terms expressly applicable to specific services, constitute the general agreement governing use of ShawAlphabet.com.

Specific licenses supplied with software, datasets, fonts, downloads, APIs, or other resources may impose additional terms for those materials.

26. Contact Us
